They say you can never walk up to a person and ask them to be your mentor. You find mentors in the little moments of real relationships you build and the things you learn from being in each other's companies and being honest about where you want to go in life.

Women Who Code Delhi’s Mentorship program sits on the principle that the power of association can really push us forward. Just in the first week of the program, I’ve had the opportunity to connect with other women in tech- all looking to push themselves to become better. The energy is palpable, charged and inspiring.

Having worked in data science and moving deeper into the field and discovering the vast subsets it holds, told me that I needed someone to help navigate how to create the path. Being in the company of my mentor- Brihi Joshi and co-mentees- Aabha Pingle and Kirti Jha, I already see that some things are starting to make more sense. Not because monumental advice was shared in the first session, but more so because we just spoke about our journey and the story we’ve created so far.

Our conversations went from our hobbies and interests to our goals and the specifics of what we need for the next leg of our journies to imposter syndrome and more. We touched upon the age-old debate of industry versus research for those interested in the fields of machine learning and for us, more specifically Natural Language Processing. The conversations led to discussing some firm beliefs we all share especially about taking risks and just taking the shot without worrying about the end outcome.

A big theme we touched upon was learning to understand our own strengths and how best to present them to the rest of the world.

I look forward to the next set of sessions of these wholesome calls filled with stories, opinions, ideas and lessons.
